# Resume References
Resume references are people who can speak to your work--former managers, colleagues, or clients. Modern practice: do not list them on the resume unless the posting asks. "References available upon request" is outdated and wastes space better used for experience and skills.
## Deeper Context

Prepare a separate reference sheet with the same header as your resume: name, title, company, relationship, phone, and email for three to five contacts. Ask permission first. Choose references who can speak to skills relevant to the role. Most ATS fields target experience and education, not references--privacy and space favor keeping them off the main document.

## FAQ

### Should I put references on my resume?

Only if the job posting requires it. Otherwise use the space for experience and prepare a separate reference list to send when asked.

### How many references do I need?

Three to five people who can speak to your fit for the role. Always get their consent before sharing contact details.
